How Does BlephEx Work?

BlephEx works by cleaning your eye area with a microsponge. The sponge is attached to a handpiece and it spins along the edge of your lids and lashes, removing debris that might block or irritate your meibomian glands. This debris is called biofilm. It’s a sticky film of bacteria that builds up in the area.

Much the way that plaque is removed by a dental cleaning, biofilm is removed through a BlephEx cleaning.

The treatment takes less than 10 minutes, and most patients feel no discomfort whatsoever—some might experience a little tickle, though! Regular treatments help to keep debris away and blepharitis at bay. We recommend a treatment every 4-6 months, depending on your particular situation.

There is no downtime at all. You can get back to your normal activities immediately following treatment. To see if BlephEx can help you, book an appointment today.

What Is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is characterized as inflammation in and around the eyelids. Sore, red eyelids with crusty eyelashes are telltale signs of blepharitis.

Eyelid hygiene is vital for keeping blepharitis at bay. Debris and bacteria along the eyelid margins can multiply and create an environment for mites to feed on, leading to even more mites and even more eyelid inflammation.

Too much inflammation can block the meibomian glands, interfering with the production of your tear film’s oil layer. Dry eyes and blepharitis frequently occur together, so targeting the inflammation can help sort out which condition is the root cause of the dryness. If you notice red eyelids, crusty eyelashes, or dry eye symptoms, it’s time to book an appointment at our dry eye clinic.
