Dry eye is one of the most common and most misunderstood eye conditions we see. It can feel like burning, grittiness, or even excessive watering, and its causes range from blocked oil glands to autoimmune conditions to the medications you take every day. Because no two cases are the same, the right treatment depends entirely on an accurate diagnosis. Below are answers to the questions patients ask us most often about dry eye symptoms, causes, and the therapies available at our Surprise clinic. What causes dry eye?

Dry eye happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or when the tears you produce are poor quality. Decreased tear production can be linked to normal aging, contact lens wear, medications like antihistamines and antidepressants, autoimmune conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or Sjögren’s syndrome, and recent laser vision correction surgery. Poor tear quality is usually caused by blocked meibomian glands along the eyelid margins, which produce the oil layer that keeps your tears from evaporating too quickly.

What are the symptoms of dry eye?

Dry eye symptoms usually affect both eyes at once and can include stinging or burning, a gritty or scratchy feeling, the sensation of something in your eye, red or watery eyes, blurry vision, light sensitivity, eye fatigue, stringy mucus around the eyes, and discomfort while wearing contact lenses.

How is dry eye diagnosed?

Your first step is a dry eye diagnostic appointment at our clinic in Surprise. We assess your tear film, evaluate the condition of your meibomian glands, and identify which type of dry eye you have. Because dry eye has multiple underlying causes, an accurate diagnosis determines which treatment will actually give you relief.

What are meibomian glands and why do they matter?

Meibomian glands are the tiny glands along the top and bottom edges of your eyelids. They produce the oil layer of your tear film, which prevents the watery layer from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked, oil production drops and your tears evaporate faster than they should. We evaluate meibomian gland function as part of every dry eye diagnostic.
