Some Tears Bring Happiness
Dry eye is exactly what it sounds like—it occurs when your eyes aren’t producing enough lubrication to keep them moist and comfortable.
There are two main types of dry eye: aqueous deficiency dry eye and evaporative dry eye. The first—and least common—occurs when the eyes simply don’t produce enough tears. The second occurs when the tears lack the appropriate chemical composition to be effective.
Your eyes need tears for clear, comfortable vision. Whatever the cause of your dry eye, punctal plugs can help tears stay on the surface of your eye longer.
To explore this option, book an appointment today.
What Are Punctal Plugs?
Punctal plugs are tiny devices that are inserted into tear ducts. Doing so blocks drainage, so the tears you have will stay on the eye’s surface longer.
Punctal plugs come in 2 varieties—temporary and semi-permanent. The temporary kind are made of materials like collagen that break down over time and are absorbed by the body. They last from a few days to several months.
Semi-permanent punctal plugs are made from either silicone or acrylic and are made to stay in the eye for years. Your optometrist facilitates removal when the time comes.
These inserts are no larger than a grain of rice and can be placed in-office without any kind of surgery.
Your optometrist will examine your eyes and determine the best size and type of plugs. Next, they’ll numb your eyes and tear ducts before inserting the plugs. In most cases, patients can resume normal activities immediately following the procedure.
